چکیده

This paper presents results from performance measurements carried out in a Differentiated Services WAN connecting three major cities in Southern Finland. The target of the measurements was to collect precise information about the level of service, experienced by a user transmitting files with FTP in a network that implements service differentiation by using drop precedence levels and separate classes for realtime and non-realtime traffic. Special attention was paid to the behaviour of competing TCP flows produced by users with different service level specifications. Background traffic from ISP’s network was injected into our test network in order to create traffic profiles which are typical in a core network. The results show clearly that the SIMA model used for the implementation of the DS mechanisms in the network nodes can provide service differentiation in a useful and fair manner in traffic conditions varying from light load to severe overload.

Evaluating Performance Among Different TCP flows in a Differentiated Services Enabled Network

This paper examines the interaction among short-lived and long-lived TCP flows in a test network that can be operated as an ordinary best effort or as a Differentiated Services (DS) enabled network, and shows how TCP service can be improved by isolating TCP flows based on their different characteristics. The target of the measurements was to investigate the interaction among TCP flows having si...

A Differentiated Pricing Framework for Improving the Performance of the Elastic Traffics in Data Networks

Rate allocation has become a demanding task in data networks as diversity in users and traffics proliferate. Most commonly used algorithm in end hosts is TCP. This is a loss based scheme therefore it exhibits oscillatory behavior which reduces network performance. Moreover, since the price for all sessions is based on the aggregate throughput, losses that are caused by TCP affect other sessions...

Fairness Measurements about TCP Flows in DS Networks: Comparison of Per-flow and Aggregate Marking Schemes

Traffic marking is an essential component in any Differentiated Services (DS) architecture. Traffic marking can be done with respect to a single flow or a flow aggregate. In a DS network, traffic marking is typically performed at aggregate levels, rather than on the level of individual flows. The use of aggregation raises a number of concerns, such as fairness concern. When we deal with aggrega...

A Framework for Practical Performance Evaluation and Traffic Engineering in IP Networks

We propose a model for performance evaluation (average throughput, packet delay and loss probability) of IP networks that are dominated by congestion-controlled (i.e., TCP-like) traffic. Our model includes heterogeneous TCP flows, UDP flows, short-lived TCP flows, and TCP flows in a differentiated services network. We also introduce a practical approach to estimating the performance of large sc...

A new Three Color Marker for TCP flows

In Differentiated Services networks, packets may receive a different treatment according to their Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) label. As a consequence, packet marking schemes can be devised to differentiate packets belonging to a same TCP flow, with the goal of improving the experienced performance. This paper presents an extensive performance evaluation of a new adaptive packet ma...
